On Wednesday 22 March, BIODEV2030 teams and stakeholders reviewed the three years of implementation in 16 countries during a conference organized at the French Development Agency (AFD). This event provided an opportunity to share the results and lessons learned from this biodiversity mainstreaming method, in order to provide keys for the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal global biodiversity framework on mainstreaming.
Numerous testimonies from the countries involved
The conference entitled “Mainstreaming and implementation of the Kunming-Montreal global biodiversity framework: sharing experiences of the BIODEV2030 project” was based on testimonies and feedbacks from many beneficiary countries. The Director of WWF Gabon, the CBD National Focal Point of Ethiopia, the Director of AFD Mozambique, representatives of the private sector from Tunisia and Mozambique… were all actors who gave testimonies on the benefits of the BIODEV2030 method for commit economic sectors on biodiversity. Their feedback has helped to identify the difficulties encountered and the levers activated in the implementation of the project.
At the heart of BIODEV2030, multi-stakeholder dialogue platforms
The speaking stakeholders also highlighted the importance of the multi-stakeholder dialogue platforms during the project. BIODEV2030 has indeed made it possible to open up the discussions on biodiversity issues thanks to the cross-sectoral mobilisation of the whole of society within these platforms. Some difficulties were also put forward, such as the one encountered in engaging some of the key stakeholders, or the long time needed to better understand the links of dependence and impact of the sectors with biodiversity. The testimonies showed how much the stakeholders contributed to the production of scientific assessments and the concerted development of sectoral commitments to reduce the pressures on biodiversity.
This mobilisation has also crossed borders. Indeed, as Stéphane Pailler (deputy director of the environment and climate at the MEAE) pointed out, BIODEV2030 helped build a coalition of countries in favour of ambitious targets for biodiversity preservation at COP15 (Montreal, December 2022).

role in the review of public policies
While private stakeholders in the priority sectors are the main targets of the project, BIODEV2030 is also a lever for building and strengthening dialogue with national authorities, as noted by Emilie Petereit, Director of the AFD agency in Mozambique. Through the negotiated voluntary commitments, stakeholders discussed about sectoral public policies. With a view to implementing sectoral voluntary commitments, financial actors have also been made aware of biodiversity issues in the majority of the 16 pilot countries, and the sector committed in Tunisia.
