"Aimed at adolescents and parents this innovative animation and game from the United Nations Environment Programme’s Ozone Secretariat uses the power of storytelling to educate and inspire young people around the world”. Reset Earth - UNEP Ozone Secretariat

In commemoration of the International Day of Education, the UNEP Ozone Secretariat has launched Reset Earth, a set of free toolkits to develop innovative teacher lesson plans and student workbooks. Understanding the need for creating innovative virtual learning material, this initiative combines animation and gamification, targeting for the education of tweens (8-12-years-old) to increase their awareness about the importance of the ozone layer and environmental protection. The toolkits have also been adapted for print and the episodes are available in a comic format for universal access.

Changing Course, Transforming Education

This year, the International Day of Education promotes Changing Course, Transforming Education. As highlighted on UNESCO’s global Futures of Education report, "pedagogy based on cooperation and solidarity including pedagogy that is collaborative, interdisciplinary and problem-posing; that treasures and sustains diversity; that invites students to unlearn prejudices and divisions; that heals the wounds of injustice; and that uses meaningful assessment to pedagogical advantage" are relevant approaches to education in all settings including in informal and nonformal settings.

In this line, Reset Earth, is guided to build-up four global competencies dimensions: (i) examine local, global and intercultural issues, (ii) understand and appreciate the perspectives and world views of others, (iii) engage in open, appropriate and effective interactions, and (iv) take action for collective well-being and sustainable development.

The CEC recognizes this outstanding work developed by the UNEP Ozone Secretariat, and invites to the Commission's members to explore the toolkit and share your testimonials in order to "support educational approaches globally as to make environment and sustainability issues form the core of experiential and service-based learning, citizen science and other informal approaches to nature education”, as mentioned in the current CEC Mandate.

About the UNEP Ozone Secretariat

Having as mission "To facilitate and support the parties to the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol and other stakeholders in implementing actions to heal and protect the ozone layer, thus protecting human health, life on planet and minimizing impacts on climate”, the UNEP Ozone Secretariat has launched Reset Earth in their education platform

The Ozone Secretariat is based in Nairobi, Kenya, housed within the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It is the administrative office for two very important ozone protection treaties/agreements, the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Both play a major role in protecting the ozone layer and reduce the size of its hole.
